Our take

A small pet with nowhere to hide is a stressed small pet, they are prey animals wired to want a burrow, and stress makes them ill and unfriendly. The Igloo is the default answer: a hard plastic dome they duck into to sleep and feel safe, in a size for everything from a dwarf hamster to a rabbit. It wipes clean, survives chewing better than cardboard, and the translucent colours let you check on a nervous animal without lifting it. Give at least one, and in a bigger cage give two so nobody has to share. Basic, cheap, essential.
