Our take
Some desert reptiles, like uromastyx or certain skinks, dig burrows to escape heat and feel secure, and loose sand just caves in. This clay substrate packs down and holds its shape, so tunnels and terraces stay put and the animal can dig a proper burrow. It creates a natural-looking desert landscape too.
