Our take
The plain wooden dowels that come with most cages are the same width all the way along, so a bird grips them identically all day and can develop sore, cramped feet. A natural branch like this varies in thickness along its length, so the foot works different muscles and stays healthy, closer to a real tree. It is cheap, and swapping one dowel for a natural perch is the easiest foot-health win there is. Scrub it clean now and then.
