Our take
Birds need a solid 10 to 12 hours of darkness, and a cage in a living room with the TV on until midnight does not give them that. Chronic short sleep makes birds cranky, nippy and, in females, prone to hormonal egg-laying. A proper cover blocks light and drafts while staying breathable, and simply covering the cage at a consistent bedtime settles a surprising number of behaviour problems. Uncover at a regular time each morning too.
