Our take
Fish in a bare, brightly-lit tank feel exposed and stressed, and cover, plants and hides, genuinely calms them and brings them out more. Live plants are ideal but a commitment; a good silk plant is the low-effort middle ground. Silk matters over cheap hard plastic because soft leaves will not shred a betta's or a fancy guppy's delicate fins. Cluster a few to break up sightlines, especially near where a nervous fish likes to hang out.
