Why UVB and heat matter so much for reptiles

Get the lighting and heat wrong and a reptile slowly develops crippling bone disease, the most common preventable illness in captive reptiles. Here is why they matter, and how to get them right.

If there is one area where reptile keeping goes wrong more than any other, it is lighting and heat, and the consequences are severe. Unlike a dog or a cat, a reptile depends on its environment for the light and warmth its body needs to function at the most basic level, and getting these wrong does not just make a reptile a bit uncomfortable, it slowly cripples it. Metabolic bone disease, the condition that follows from inadequate UVB and calcium, is one of the most common things exotics vets see, and it is almost entirely preventable. Understanding why UVB and heat matter, and getting them right from the start, is the single most important part of keeping a reptile healthy.

Why UVB is not optional lighting

The most misunderstood piece of reptile care is UVB, so it is worth being clear about what it actually does, because it is far more than decorative light.

Many reptiles, particularly the day-active basking species, need ultraviolet B light to make vitamin D3 in their skin. Vitamin D3 is what allows their bodies to absorb and use calcium. Without enough UVB, the chain breaks: the reptile cannot make enough D3, so it cannot use the calcium in its diet, so its body is starved of usable calcium no matter how much it eats. The result is metabolic bone disease, in which the bones soften, weaken, and deform. So UVB is not lighting for our benefit or the animal’s comfort, it is a fundamental part of the reptile’s biology that we have to supply artificially because the enclosure blocks the sunlight it would get in the wild. For a species that needs it, providing proper UVB is as essential as providing food and water, and skipping or skimping on it is one of the commonest and most damaging mistakes new keepers make.

Getting UVB right in practice

Providing UVB is more than screwing in a bulb, and a few practical points make the difference between UVB that works and UVB that does not.

Use a UVB source suited to your species and its needs, since different reptiles need different levels, and position it correctly, because UVB weakens with distance and the reptile needs to be within the effective range while also able to move into shade. Crucially, UVB does not pass through ordinary glass or plastic, so a bulb mounted behind a glass barrier gives the animal little or no benefit. And UVB bulbs fade: their output drops off well before they stop producing visible light, so a bulb that looks fine may be giving almost no useful UVB after a year. This is why they need replacing on a schedule, typically every six to twelve months depending on the type, rather than when they burn out. Why heat is just as fundamental

Alongside UVB sits the other environmental essential, heat, and it matters for a different but equally basic reason.

Reptiles are ectotherms, which means they cannot make their own body heat and depend entirely on their surroundings to warm up. They need to reach the right body temperature to digest food, stay active, and keep their bodily systems working. A reptile that is too cold cannot digest properly, loses its appetite, becomes sluggish, and over time gets ill, which is why a cold enclosure is behind so many feeding and health problems. Providing heat is therefore not about comfort but about basic function. What a reptile needs is a temperature gradient: a warm basking area at one end where it can heat up, and a cooler zone at the other where it can cool down, so it can move between them and regulate its own temperature the way it would in the wild by moving in and out of the sun.

Getting the environment right first

The thread running through all of this is that with reptiles, the environment is not a backdrop to the animal’s health, it substantially is the animal’s health.

A reptile in an enclosure with correct UVB, a proper heat gradient measured with real thermometers, and the right dietary calcium has the foundations it needs to thrive. A reptile missing any of these is on a slow path to illness no matter how much you care about it, because these are not extras but the basic conditions its body requires to function. This is why experienced keepers stress getting the setup right before the animal even arrives, and why so much of reptile care comes back to the enclosure rather than to the animal directly. It also explains why a reptile that stops eating so often turns out to be too cold, and why bone disease so often turns out to be a UVB problem.

Get UVB and heat right, then, and you have done the single most important thing for a reptile’s health. Provide proper UVB for species that need it, positioned correctly and replaced on schedule, pair it with correct dietary calcium, supply a measured heat gradient controlled where needed, and you prevent the metabolic bone disease and the feeding and health problems that fill exotics clinics. It takes some kit and some understanding up front, but it is the foundation everything else rests on, and it is the difference between a reptile that merely survives and one that genuinely thrives.
